Professional Development

MAPSLI's professional development committee is a group of volunteers committed to actively pursuing and sharing skill development opportunities with visual language interpreters

The committee investigates opportunities for sign language interpreters to learn the finer details about American Sign Language (ASL), team-building skills, Deaf Culture, medical interpreting, legal interpreting, stress management skills, interpreting ASL into English, etc.

Current initiatives include:
  • Contacting presenters inquiring on their availability to conduct workshops in Nova Scotia (more details).
  • CES Workshops - two workshops offered annually - Interpretation of Interactive Interviews on April 25 &26, 2009 and Interpretation of Narratives on November 7 & 8, 2009 (more details)

Completed projects include:

  • Developed a Certificate of Completion for participants who attend workshops hosted by MAPSLI.
  • Prepared a list of books & videos available through the Halifax Regional Library (more details).
  • Prepared a list of books and videos available through the Nova Scotia Community College (more details) .
  • Purchased new books and videos from various retail outlets and donated these resources to the Nova Scotia Community Library.
  • Developing standardized Policies & Procedures.
  • Hosted discussion groups for sign language interpreters (more details).
