Remembering Sandra Spears

A young Sandra at a Pride event. She is wearing a black tank top and white pants, short blonde hair. Her hands are mid air signing. She is smiling looking at the camera.

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of Sandra Spears.

Sandra spent the majority of her life working as a sign language interpreter in the Maritimes. After graduating of the first class from NSCC in 1995, she spent many years serving as a staff community interpreter with the Society of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Nova Scotians (SDHHNS). Sandra was also a beloved interpreter for Halifax Pride, standing alongside many LGBTQ2AI+ community performers, entertainers, educators, and Drag Queens and Kings, to ensure that the Deaf community had full access to these vibrant events.

Her commitment to mentoring new interpreters and her unwavering support for the Deaf and LGBTQ2AI+ communities leave a lasting impact. Sandra’s contributions and spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and worked alongside her.

We will miss you. Rest in peace.
